7 January 2009HAWARDEN, Iowa -- Hilda V. Cain, 90, of Sioux City, formerly of Hawarden, died peacefully Sunday, Jan. 4, 2009, at the Hospice Care Unit of Indian Hills Nursing and Rehab Center in Sioux City.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at United Methodist Church in Hawarden, with the Rev. Barb Joy officiating. Burial will be in Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be noon until service time Friday, with the family present at 12:30 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden.
Hilda V. Cain, the daughter of Chester and Sarah (Henry) Marshall, was born March 14, 1918, in Union County, S.D.
She married Fountain Cain on March 23, 1936. Together, they made their home in Hawarden. She spent 60 years living in Hawarden, raising four children and working for 11 years at Otis Radio. She moved to Indian Hills Nursing and Rehab Center 11 years ago.
She crocheted hundreds and hundreds of afghans, dolls, mittens, hats and doilies given to church projects and family members. Yearly, she planted a large garden, which fed her family and many others in the community.
She is survived by her son and his wife, Richard and Peggy of Sioux City; two daughters, Karen DeVries of Denver, Colo., and Christi Scheer of Greeley, Colo.; a brother, Russell Marshall of Ireton, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1988; a daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Don Branstiter; a grandson, Scott Branstiter; two sisters; and six brothers.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Hospice Unit of Indian Hills Nursing and Rehab in Sioux City or the Hawarden United Methodist Church.
The family wishes to thank the many compassionate nurses and caregivers at Indian Hills for many years of dedication and Hilda's well being.
