SIOUX CITY -- Sidney C. Baumsten, 93, of Laguna Woods, Calif., formerly of Sioux City, passed away Friday, Jan. 2, 2009, following a lengthy illness.

Burial was held Jan. 4, in Hillside Memorial Cemetery, Los Angeles.

Mr. Baumsten was born in Manchester, N.H., but had lived in Sioux City and New Orleans before settling in Laguna 22 years ago with his wife, Margaret. He and Margaret both grew up in Sioux City and graduated from Central High School. He and his brother, Herb, owned National Furniture Company from 1948 to 1970, on Pearl Street and later moved to Sixth and Wesley Way in Sioux City. They were one of the first business owners to do their own live commercials. The couple moved to New Orleans in 1970 to be with their daughter and first grandchild. In New Orleans, he was a nursing home administrator. In 1975, he was honored as Administrator of the Year for Louisiana.

He held leadership positions in numerous Jewish organizations including A.D.L., B'nai Brith, Temple Judea Brotherhood, Jewish Federation of O.C. and Jewish War Veterans. He was a loving and beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather and the most loyal of friends.

Survivors include his wife, of 69 years, Margaret; daughters, Vicki Karno and Zoe Greenberg; grandchildren, Michlele and Jeff Varon, Michael Karno, Adam and Seth Eisenstein; great-grandchildren, Mollye and Matthew Varon; and sons-in-law, Jacob Karno and Richard Greenberg.

Memorials may be directed to Congregation Beth Shalom in Sioux City.
