SIOUX CITY -- Lawrence D. Dicks, 81, of Sioux City passed away Sunday, Jan. 4, 2009, at a local care facility.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Southern Hills Baptist Church, 4301 Old Lakeport Road, with the Rev. Bob Dillman officiating. Visitation with the family will be 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service in Sergeant Bluff.

Lawrence D. Dicks was born June 9, 1927, in Anthon, Iowa, the son of Paul and Edith (Banta) Dicks. He attended school in rural Anthon and later earned his general education diploma. He served in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1952. His grandson, Brandon Dicks, is now serving in Iraq.

On Sept. 30, 1953, he married Phyllis Scott in Sioux City. He was a machinist for Wilson Trailer, Westendorf in Smithland, Iowa, North American Manufacturing and Prince Hydraulics. He retired as a security guard at the Sioux Gateway Airport during the mid 1990s. He married Elizabeth "Betty" on Sept. 13, 1980, in Sioux City.

He enjoyed fishing, camping, cards and reading books. He was a huge Minnesota Twins fan and for many years was a member of the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth "Betty"; three sons and wives, Duane and Deb, Larry and Melanie and Paul, all of Sioux City; five daughters and husbands, Cathy Echeverri of Denver, Colo., Connie and Ronnie Iddings, Cindy and Sid Vogel, Carrie and Jimmy Churchill and Christy and Todd Jasa; four stepsons and wives, Jerry and Marsha Sailer of Moville, Iowa, Jim and Laura Sailer of Moville, David and Vicky Sailer of Pennsylvania, and Dennis and Penny Sailer of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; a stepdaughter and her husband, Jan and James Harcourt of Jefferson City, Mo.; a brother, Richard Dicks of Wisconsin; two sisters, Norma Gregg of Cherokee, Iowa, and Alice Nichols of Sioux City; 26 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and his special dog, Lexi.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Bob, Pete and Meryl; and a sister, Pauline.

The family requests memorials be directed to Sunrise Retirement Community.
