Businessman, Veteran, Flier Roy Warfield Dies

Roy M. Warfield, 70, 3920 Grandview Blvd., well known Sioux City businessman died Wednesday night at a hospital after a long illness.

Mr. Warfield was born July 13, 1897, at Webster City, Iowa.

His parents moved to Sioux City in 1900.

He was educated in Sioux City public schools and was graduated from Sioux City High school in 1914. After service in World War I he received his engineering degree at the University of Chicago.

When the Civil Aeronautics Authority was established in 1927, Mr. Warfield received the first pilot’s license issued.

Establish Air Field

Mr. Warfield and the late Warren Anderson established Rickenbacker Field at Stevens, South Dakota, now North Sioux City, in 1919. He left Sioux City for Chicago in 1920.

Mr. Warfield operated the Roymer Engineering Co. in Chicago until 1931, when he returned to Sioux City. He established the Warfield Distributing Co. which he operated until 1919.

Mr. Warfield was called back into service at the start of World War II and was in charge of P38 pilot training under the 4th Fighter Command in California, first as operator of officer of the 329th Fighter Group and later as director of training at the 441st Air Base Unit.

Upon returning to Sioux City he continued operation of the Warfield Distributing Co. and Riverview Amusement Park.

Builds Drive-In Theater

Mr. Warfield built and operated the Gordon Drive-In Theater until 1959. He retired in 1963.

He was a member of a Masonic Lodge in Chicago, the Abu Bekr Shrine and the White Horse Patrol.

He married Beryl Brown November 3, 1937, in Corpus Christa, Texas.

Survivors include the widow, two sons, Merns of Key West, Florida and Roy C. of New Orleans, a daughter, Mrs. Thomas E. Brosamie of Sioux City; a brother, J. R. Warfield of Sioux City; a sister, Mrs. Joseph “Ann” Wenger of Vista, California; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

The body was taken to the Rutledge Funeral Home.

Funeral services for Roy M. Warfield, 70, 3920 Grandview Blvd. will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Rutledge Funeral Home. The Rev. Curtis H. Lindahl of Mayflower Congregational Church will officiate. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Francis Spain, Merle Hofeldt, Ken Wayman, Jake Goede, Jack Pecaut and Daniel Flanagan.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. E. G. Valiquette, Dr. Horst Blume, Dr. Ralph Miller, Dr. Frederick Wilson Sr., Dr. w. C. Boden, Maurice Flanagan, Bernard Brown, Wallace Huff, E. A. Johnson and John Shores.

Landmark Lodge 103, AF&AM will conduct Masonic rites at 8 o’clock tonight at the funeral home.

A memorial is being established at the First Unitarian Church.

Mr. Warfield was born July 13, 1897 at Webster City, Iowa. His parents moved to Sioux City in 1900.
