CHATSWORTH, Iowa -- Verlin L. Sturtevant, 79, of Chatsworth passed away Sunday, Nov. 13, 2005, at Akron Care Center in Akron, Iowa.

Verlin Lyle Sturtevant was born Nov. 28, 1925, on the family farm in Merrill, Iowa, to Lyle and Alma (Tucker) Sturtevant. He attended country school in Liberty Township. He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army as a military policeman.

He was united in marriage to Shirley J. Moore on Sept. 14, 1949, in Elk Point, S.D. The couple has lived in Wisconsin from 1951 to 1954, where he farmed one of three farms with his father. They later moved to Arizona and in 1956, moved to California, where he worked for Hughes Aircraft and LA Ditching. In 1966, the family moved to Washington state and eventually returned to Iowa in 1970. In 1974, the family moved to Chatsworth. He had worked as a grounds keeper for the Sioux City Country Club and later the Akron Golf Club. He enjoyed working outdoors. He has worked on farms with dairy cows, hogs and stock cows. He also worked in the logging industry and maintenance field.

He as was a member of the Sioux City Eagles Club, where he enjoyed dancing. He also was a member of the Siouxland Country Music Association and the Siouxland Camero Club.

Survivors include his children, Julie and her husband, Russell Jacobson, of Akron, Iowa, David Sturtevant of Ireton, Iowa, and Jim Sturtevant and his wife, Teresa, of Warsaw, Mo.; three grandchildren, Justin, Staci and Serena; a great-granddaughter, Kiya; many stepgrandchildren; a sister and her husband, Betty and Richard Henneous of Hornick, Iowa; a brother and his wife, Kelly and Maxine Sturtevant of Sloan, Iowa; and a sister-in-law, Jeanne Sturtevant of Norfolk, Neb.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lyle and Alma (Tucker) Sturtevant; a son, Paul Allen Sturtevant in 1978; a brother, Donald Sturtevant; a sister, Fern Hartman; and a grandson, Derek Jacobson.
