CUSHING, Iowa -- Darlene M. Juelfs, 82, of Cushing passed away Monday, May 11, 2009, at Cherokee Regional Medical Center in Cherokee, Iowa.

Services will be 2 p.m. today at St. John Lutheran Church in Cushing, with the Rev. Bev Wolff officiating. Burial will be in Cushing Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home in Holstein, Iowa.

Darlene was born April 30, 1927, in Cushing, to William "Bill" and Minnie (Volkert) Grell. She attended country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Cushing Consolidated High School. She earned a teaching certificate at Westmar College in Le Mars, Iowa, and taught at Douglas Center country school.

On June 29, 1947, she was united in marriage to Dale Juelfs. While raising their six children, they lived and farmed south of Cushing. They retired from farming and FirstStar Bank in 1993.

She was a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church, where she volunteered as a teacher, Vacation Bible School helper, women's Bible study participant, leader and quilter. She served her community as postmaster relief at the Cushing Post Office, on the election board and as a census taker. Other organizations benefitting from her efforts include Band/Music Boosters during her children's school years and the American Legion Auxiliary. The couple frequently attended dances, enjoying both the dancing and music tremendously. They also enjoyed playing cards with friends.

Survivors include her husband; her six children, Sharon and her husband, Lon Wilde of Sioux City, Connie and her husband, Gary Jenkins of Wahpeton, Iowa, Lana and her husband, Jim Cunningham of Cushing, Lon and his special friend, Tyann of Battle Creek, Iowa, Hope and her husband, Frank Lovera of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Jay and his wife, Kim of Pierson, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a great-granddaughter, Lauren Jenkins; and twin brothers, Arnold and Reynold Grell.
