ANTHON, Iowa -- Frances E. Schuh, 94, of Anthon died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009, at the Embassy Care Center in Sergeant Bluff.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anthon, with the Rev. Terry Roder officiating. Burial will be in Mount St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with the family present 5 to 7 p.m. and a vigil wake service at 7 p.m., at the church. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon.

Frances Evelyn Schuh was born May 18, 1914, on a farm west of Anthon, the daughter of Frank C. Gothier and Nellie (Neebel) Gothier. At the age of four, the family moved to what was later the Overlook Mink Ranch in Anthon. She graduated from Anthon Public School and attended college at Buena Vista in Storm Lake, Iowa, and Morningside College in Sioux City. For several years prior to her marriage, she taught in rural schools and from that time on, teaching became her passion.

She was united in marriage to Daniel "Frank" Schuh at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anthon by the Rev. Leo Savage on June 19, 1939. After her marriage, the couple lived in Anthon, where they were in the produce and seed business. In later years, they farmed. In 1955, she began teaching again at St. Joseph Parochial in Anthon for 16 years and St. Mary's Parochial in Mapleton, Iowa for one year. She began teaching at Anthon-Oto Public in Anthon in 1970 and taught there for 11 years. She retired in 1981, having taught a total of 40 years. She also taught piano lessons for many years, another facet of her life that she loved. The couple celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary before Frank's death in October 1994.

She was a life long resident of Anthon until moving to the Floyd House in Sergeant Bluff and was currently living at Embassy Care Center.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and a charter member of the Catholic Daughters of America. She was an avid reader and loved all kinds of hand work, especially crocheting and embroidering. St. Patrick's Day was always celebrated by the couple, a tradition they passed onto their children. Family always came first to her and she was a really good mom and grandmother to them.

Survivors include her son and his wife, Daniel and Mona of Fairmont, Minn.; a daughter, Jeannine Gaul of Sergeant Bluff; a daughter and her husband, Suzanne and Terry Friedrichs of South Sioux City; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Along with her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Everett and Donald; and a son-in-law, Jim Gaul.

Frances leaves behind a great legacy.
