SIOUX CITY -- Laverda B. "Birdie" Petersen, 84, of Sioux City, formerly of Onawa, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2008, at a local care facility.

Services will be 11 a.m. Sunday at Seventh Day Adventist Church, 3636 Aspenwood St., in Sioux City, with the Rev. David Lincoln officiating. A luncheon will follow the service. Burial will follow the luncheon in Hansen Cemetery, near Irene, S.D. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service in Sergeant Bluff.

Laverda was born Nov. 12, 1923, in Yankton, S.D., the daughter of Thomas and Lily (Kelner) Gibson.

On March 2, 1950, she was united in marriage to Alvin P. Petersen in Sioux Falls, S.D. She worked as an accountant for Yankton Production Credit Association for 10 years. Later, she worked at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion for 26 years, prior to retiring in 1982. She and her husband lived most of their married life around Meckling, S.D., moving to Onawa, Iowa in 1986.

She may be remembered for playing her cello in the USD orchestra. Previous to which, she had played with the Yankton College Conservatory Orchestra, the Lewis and Clark Orchestra, the Sioux City Symphony and the Sioux Falls Orchestra. She was a member of Onawa Seventh Day Adventist Church. She gave of herself to many charities. She made friends easily and was a comfort to many.

She is survived by a son and his wife, Gary and Cynthia Petersen and his children, Chelsea Kavanaugh, Crystal and her husband, Joe Ebner, Andre Petersen and his wife, Christina, Angela Petersen and Phillip Petersen; a son and his wife, Paul and Colleen Petersen and his children, Benjamin Petersen, Lucas Petersen and Joe Petersen and her children, Jessica and Joseph Kunz, Jacob and Anthony Harrington; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a brother; and two grandchildren.
