26 December 2008LAWTON, Iowa -- Richard G. "Dick" Carlson, 64, of Lawton passed away from prostate cancer Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008, at his residence.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Community Presbyterian Church in Lawton, with Lorna Peters officiating. Visitation with the family will be 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service in Sergeant Bluff.
Richard was born Dec. 12, 1944, in Sioux City, the son of Douglas and LaVerne (Watterson) Carlson Sr.
He attended grade school in Sioux City and graduated in 1963 from Westfield High School in Westfield, Iowa. While in high school, he worked on the Easton farm and milked cows with his lifelong friend, Terry Gries. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1965 and served 47 months in Grand Forks, N.D., as a crew chief on a P-2 fire engine. After his discharge, during October 1969, he started working for the Sioux City Fire Department. "Dickie" as he was called by his fellow firefighters, retired in 1996 as a lieutenant on Engine 7 hazardous materials crew.
He was married to Jo Ann Johns on Feb. 14, 1970, in Sioux City. They lived in Sioux City until moving to their acreage near Lawton in 1978.
He was a member of Community Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed restoring older cars and after retirement began restoring Cushman Motor scooters with the help of his uncle, Dave.
He is survived by his wife, Jo Ann; two sons, Darren and his wife, Suzanne and Jason and his fiancee, Heather Strom, all of Sioux City; a granddaughter, Alex; two brothers, Douglas and his wife, Mary Ellen of Akron, Iowa, and Dan of Sioux City; seven sisters, Mary and her husband, Kenneth Johns, Carolyn and her husband, Ken Stultz, Jeannie Carlson and her friend, Greg Moore, Kathy and her husband, Dennis Brunsting, Sandy and her husband, Leo Welch, Cheri and her husband, Dennis Sander and Laurie and her husband, Mike Blanchard, all of Sioux City.
He was preceded in death by his parents
