SIOUX CITY -- Douglas J. Aman, 50, of Sioux City passed away at his residence Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008, surrounded by his family after a long battle with cancer.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at First Assembly of God Church. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a time of sharing at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service in Sergeant Bluff.

Douglas John Aman was born Nov. 20, 1958, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, the son of Lawrence and Rose Marie (Morrison) Aman. In 1959, the family moved to Sioux City. He graduated from West High School in 1977.

On Dec. 28, 1979, he was united in marriage to Susan Rohr in Sioux City. He worked as a delivery driver for House of Kitchens. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1982. After basic training, he went to fuels specialist technical school at Chanute Air Force Base. He worked in that field throughout his Air Force career, serving at Mountain Home AFB Idaho, Offutt AFB Nebraska and Elmendorf AFB Alaska. He served his country well, earning numerous awards for leadership, loyalty and discipline. In 1992, at the rank of staff sergeant, he elected to leave the service and moved back to Sioux City.

Upon returning to Sioux City, he worked in the lab and quality control at Jebro Inc. Later, he worked for Smurfit Stone Containers as a quality technician. He was promoted to quality manager in April 2007 and transferred to Rogers, Ark. In September 2007, he was diagnosed with cancer. They moved back to Sioux City and on March 1, 2008, he went on disability due to his illness.

He was an outdoorsman, enjoying family camping and fishing trips. He worked on his Chevy's and was always known for his willingness to help others. He was an avid Dale Earnhardt fan and greatly enjoyed collecting die cast cars and other memorabilia.

He is survived by his wife, Sue; four sons, Steve and his wife, Jill of Sergeant Bluff, Scott and his wife, Becky of Dakota Dunes, S.D., Ryan Aman and Tyler Aman, both of Sioux City; seven grandchildren, Grace, Sydney, Miles, Nicholas, Kayla, Madeline and Hannah; a brother, Dennis Aman of Minneapolis; and a sister, Deborah Aman of Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and grandparents.
