DAKOTA CITY -- Donna Rae Miller, 71, of Dakota City passed away Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Salem Lutheran Church, rural Dakota City, with the Rev. Judith Wascher officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. Monday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home.

Donna was born May 23, 1937, in Yankton, S.D., the daughter of Walter and Wilma (Ewing) Carstens. She graduated from Hartington High School in 1955. She married LaVerle Keith Miller July 13, 1956, in Hartington, Neb. Later that year, they moved to Sioux City. In 1994, they moved to Dakota City. Donna was employed for IBP and later helped to open the three Bread Baskets in Sioux City, retiring in 1995. After retiring, she worked as a caregiver and an in-house maid.

Donna was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in rural Dakota City. In her lifetime she also worked as a caterer from her home, volunteered some of her cooking services to the church and in her spare time she enjoyed time with her family, knitting afghans and reading.

She is survived by her husband, LaVerle of 52 years; five children, Cindy Miller, Valerie (Ken) McClain, Kimberly (Martin) Adamiak, LaVerle "Keith" Miller and Chad (Jana) Miller; five granddaughters, Tonya Adamiak, Lynette McClain, Sarah, Samantha and Shantel Miller; two sisters, Kay Bakkan of Libby Mont., Janice (Leo) Murray of Algona, Iowa; and a brother, Walter "Keith" (Sylvia) Carstens of Holstein, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Wilma Carstens; and a brother, William "Bill" Carstens.

Pallbearers will be members of her family.
