JACKSON, Neb. -- John R. "Jack" Ryan, 82, of Jackson passed away Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Jackson, with the Rev. Paul Albenesius officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery at Jackson. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., a rosary at 6 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Homes. Online condolences may be sent to www.christysmith.com.

Jack was born July 24, 1926, on the John J. Ryan farm situated between Jackson and Willis, Neb., to Thomas R. and Mary E. (Walsh) Ryan. He was raised in Jackson and attended Teller Country School through the eighth grade and graduated from Jackson Public Schools. Jack served in the U.S. Army from March 1951 to December 1952. He was an MP during the Korean conflict.

Upon his discharge from the service, he was introduced to his future wife, Rose Marie "Boots" Boden, by his double first cousin, Mary Ann (Walsh) Davidson. Jack and Boots were married in St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sioux City on Feb. 20, 1954. They made their home in Jackson, where they farmed.

Jack was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Jackson and belonged to the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of American Legion Post 175.

Survivors include his daughters, Catherine and husband, Dennis Hurley of Ponca, Neb., Mary and husband, Dick Watchorn of Ponca, and Margie Karlberg of Sioux Falls, S.D.; sons, Daniel and wife, Bonnie Jackson and Bill and wife, Micki, all of Jackson, Ed and wife, Linda of Dundee, Ore., and Bob and wife, Leah of Ponca; 16 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Patty Ryan of Wichita, Kan.; a special cousin, Mary Ann Davidson; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Boots in 1999; a brother, William "Bun"; and a great-granddaughter.
