SIOUX CITY -- James H. Solberg, USN, Ret., 84 of Sioux City, passed away Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008, at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne, Minn.

Visitation and a time of remembrance will be held 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Waterbury Funeral Service in Sergeant Bluff.

James Henry Solberg was born in Minneapolis, Minn., on March 5, 1924, the son of Arthur and Nellie (Brockhill) Solberg. Jim spent most of his childhood in the Twin Cities area. In 1942, at the age of 18, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. During the Korean War, Jim was stationed on the USS Oriskany and flew more than 250 missions over Korea. In 1968, after 26 years in the service, Jim retired from the Navy and entered the Navy Reserves. He was promoted to Commander of Surface Reserves in Sioux City.

Jim married Jean Turcott on June 18, 1949. They raised four children as they were stationed at different bases within his Navy commission. He moved to Sioux City when he was promoted to commander. Jim also owned several businesses at one time in South Sioux City and Vermillion, S.D. In later years, he worked for Mullin Manufacturing. Jim was married to Linda White on November 17, 1994, in Sioux City.

Jim loved kids and his dogs. He would drive down to the YMCA to visit with friends and exercise. He loved to watch sports on TV or any program dealing with fighter jets or the Navy.

Survivors include his wife, Linda; four children, Nancy and her husband, Steve Sweisberger of Sioux City, Duke Solberg and Jimmy Solberg, both of Brainerd, Minn., and Tina and her husband Dan Myers of Big Lake, Minn.; two brothers, Art Solberg and his wife, Ilene, and Bill Solberg and his wife, Mavis all of Bloomington, Minn.; a sister, Marilyn Kursu of Robinsdale, Minn.; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and first wife, Jean.
