SIOUX CITY -- Robert Atwood, 84, of Sioux City passed away Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008, at a local medical center.

Per his wishes, the body was cremated. Private family services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service in Sergeant Bluff.

Robert was born March 29, 1924, in Sioux City, the son of Charles and Esther (Ayers) Atwood. He graduated in 1943 from Central High School. He then served his country with the U.S. Army Air Corps as an air operations specialist with the 30th Bomb Group in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He received his honorable discharge in February 1946.
On Nov. 2, 1946, he was united in marriage to Catherine Donovan. He worked as a printer in several area print shops. He later started working for the Sioux City Journal and retired as a printer in 1988.

After retirement, the couple loved to travel across the United States and Europe. He enjoyed fishing and the time spent with family.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine; a son and his wife, John and Barb of Sioux City; three daughters and their husbands, Marsha and Bud Knore of Kennewick, Wash., Maureen and Greg Rohmiller of Merrill, Iowa, and Joyce and Craig Miller of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 16 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Elmer Atwood of Sherman, Texas, and William Atwood of Sioux City; and two sisters, Dorothy Edwards of Sioux City and Ruth Grosenbacker of Tiger Creek, Fla.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Jack; and a sister, Helen Lias.
