SOUTH SIOUX CITY -- Jeannine R. Bahr Mayberry, 74, formerly of South Sioux City and Hornick, Iowa, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2008, at a nursing home in Sioux City.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. today at the First Presbyterian Church in South Sioux City with the Rev. Stephen Niles officiating. Private burial will be in the Dakota City Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Becker-Hunt Funeral Home, South Sioux City.

Jeannine was born Friday, Oct. 13, 1933, in Winnebago, Neb., with the noon whistle blowing. She was the daughter of Elmer Lee "Dude" and Helen Leola (Leedom) Bahr. She attended school in Sioux City, South Sioux City and Richmond, Calif.

She married Marvin Vernon Mayberry, the son of John E. and Lois Crockford Mayberry, on Jan. 26, 1949. in Elk Point, S.D.

The couple lived in Waterbury, Neb. before moving to the Fayette/Glasgow, Mo., area in January 1951, to farm. They returned to South Sioux City in July 1961. She worked for Sportsman in Sioux City, before starting her own lettering and embroidery business, Jean's Lettering, in her home, in South Sioux City. She and Marvin were very proud of the fact that while living in Missouri, they helped to elect the first Republican sheriff in Howard County since the Civil War. Jean worked in the voting precincts in Missouri as well as in South Sioux City.

She was a member of the Methodist Church in Glasgow, Mo., then the First Presbyterian Church in South Sioux City. In South Sioux, she served as a deacon, an elder and a Sunday School superintendent for many years. She was a life member of the Hanson-Greenleaf American Legion Auxiliary in Dakota City. She served in various positions on the local and district level. She was past member of the Rebekah Lodge in South Sioux City. She served various positions until the lodge closed in about 1982. She was a member of the Friday Morning TOPS group. She was a member of the Martha Washington Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution. She was proud of her German heritage through the Bahr family, and proud of being a seventh generation granddaughter of Daniel Boone.

The couple loved to play pinochle and square dance. She enjoyed her church, her friends, her garden, her flowers, her rhubarb, her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She lived in South Sioux City until moving in March 2002 to live with her daughter, Peggy. She just moved to the nursing home 10 days ago.

Survivors include daughter Peggy and her husband David Powell of Hornick; granddaughter Angela and her husband Michael Mooney of Hornick; great-grandchildren Nicholas Bieler and his fiancee, Amber, of Sioux City, Catlin M. Bieler and Kelsey Kelsheimer of Windom, Minn., Sarah and Peter Mooney of Hornick; grandson, Jeffrey Powell and Mishelle Even of Moville, Iowa; great-grandchildren Shelby and Colby Powell of Sioux City; granddaughter Nicole and her husband Troy Kelsheimer of Moville; great-grandchildren Brittany and Tyler Kelsheimer of Moville and Anissa Ladwig of Ida Grove, Iowa; son John Mayberry and his wife Judy of Texas; grandsons, Michael and Phillip, both of England, Joshua and his wife Trisha, U.S. Army, Germany; granddaughter, Jennifer Mayberry of Texas; great-grandchildren, LynneMarie of England, Trinity and Christian of Germany; two sisters, Marilyn Weyhrich of Ralston, Neb., Valda Young and her husband Marvin of Royal, Neb.; one brother, Tim Bahr and his

wife Marilyn of Dakota City; one uncle, Everett Bahr and his wife Doris of Dakota City; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin on June 6, 1970; and her parents.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Powell, Troy Kelsheimer, Mike Mooney, Nick and Catlin Bieler and Colby Powell. Honorary pallbearers will be Marvin Young, Tim Bahr, Barry Barge, Kevin and Korey Young, Tyler Kelsheimer, Michael, Phillip and Joshua Mayberry.
