Darrell Eugene Kiewel, 81, of Sioux City died Saturday, Dec. 3, 2005, at a local nursing home following a brief illness with cancer.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. Merrill G. Muller officiating. There will be a flag presentation to the family by the American Legion George Nelson Post 662 of Sergeant Bluff. Following the service, the body will be cremated. Burial will be at a later date in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, rural Akron, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 8:30 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mr. Kiewel was born May 26, 1924, on the family farm near Beresford, S.D., the son of Reinhardt and Verlan (Bedient) Kiewel. He was raised in the Beresford area, graduating from Beresford High School. Following his education, he entered the military, serving with the U.S. Army during World War II. Following his discharge, he came back to this area, moving to Sioux City in 1947 and had lived here since that time.

He married Dorothy A. Welch on Aug. 11, 1951, in Sioux City. She died Aug. 13, 1993, in Sioux City. He was a purchasing agent/bookkeeper for Monroe Welding, which was later purchased by Linweld.

He was a member of the Sioux City Eagles, South Sioux City Moose Lodge, the Boys of 68 and the American Legion George Nelson Post 662.

He is survived by three sons and their wives, Ron and Jewel Kiewel of Rockford, Ill., Rein and Lynn Kiewel of Chantilly, Va., and Kevin and Lorie Kiewel of Dakota Dunes, S.D.; six grandchildren, Karina, Rein Michael, Kaitlyn, Dylan and Jack Kiewel and Audra Yates; and a special friend, Helen Rowland and her family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a brother, Clayton Kiewel; and two sisters, Lois Arne and Doris Beck.
