H. Valerie Swanson, 86, of Sioux City died Wednesday, July 12, 2006, at Prince of Peace Nursing Home in Sioux Falls, S.D. following a lengthy illness.

Private services will be held today at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel, with the Rev. Michael Zabel officiating. Private graveside services will be held Saturday in Graceland Park Cemetery.

Hester Valerie was born Dec. 23, 1919, in Ystrad Mynach, Hengoed, Wales, Great Britain. She served in the Royal Great Britain Women's Air Corps. She came to the United States in 1947 as a war bride.

She married Kenneth E. Swanson on Dec. 1, 1947, in Omaha. He passed away Jan. 13, 2004, in Sioux City.

She was a loving wife and mother. She also was a great cook.

Survivors include two daughters, Janet (Alan) Pierce of Deerfield, Ill., and Susan Thompson of Sioux Falls, S.D.; a son, Stephen (Joan) Swanson of Sioux City; two grandchildren, Brian and Brett Swanson; and two sisters, Maisie Pittwood of Bournemouth, England, and Bronnie Azes of Norwich, England.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenneth E. Swanson; two sisters; and two brothers.
