SMITHLAND, Iowa -- Edith Martha Van Cleave, 79, of Mapleton, Iowa, formerly of Smithland, died Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2005, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton, with the Rev. Scott Fiege officiating. Burial will be in Willow Township Cemetery, Holly Springs, Iowa. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Willman Funeral Home in Rodney, Iowa.

Edith was born May 9, 1926, in Ponca, Neb., the daughter of Charles and Martha (Rahn) Stark. She attended school in Ponca.

On Feb. 17, 1946, she married Raymond James Van Cleave in South Sioux City. They farmed near Smithland. Mr. Van Cleave died June 26, 1999, in Omaha. She had lived in Mapleton for the last six years.

She was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church. She loved crocheting, watching birds and reading Louis L'Amour westerns.

Survivors include seven children, Ruby and her husband, Vern Monahan, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Kenneth Van Cleave of Omaha, Mary Ann and her husband, Randy Lussier, of Hubbard, Neb., Roger Van Cleave and his companion, Alice, of Emmetsburg, Iowa, Dianne and her husband, Kenneth Deck, of Newmanstown, Pa., Deborah and her husband, Bill Mead, of Dow City, Iowa, and James Van Cleave and his companion, Sue Wessling, of Mapleton; 16 grandchildren, Timothy, Kyle, Casey, Jamie, Amber, Ashley and Jesse Van Cleave, Matthew Monahan, Connie Ruby, Brenda and Dale Lussier, Virginia and Kevin Deck, Dustin, Jeremiah and Billie Jo Mead; four great-grandchildren, Kourtney, Tyler, Jonathan and Kylee; a brother, Ralph Stark of Ponca, Neb.; and five sisters, Ethel Lute of Madison, Mo., Freda Warchol, Marie Yetts and Eunice Garabrandt, all of Omaha, and Donna Kiser of Oklahoma City, Okla.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and four brothers, Dale, Raymond, Orville and Lawrence Stark.
