SERGEANT BLUFF -- Dr. Paul V. Byers, 75, of Sergeant Bluff died Sunday, Oct. 9, 2005, at Embassy Nursing and Rehab in Sergeant Bluff.

As per his request, cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Shepherd of Peace Lutheran Church in Sergeant Bluff, with the Rev. Tim Schiller officiating. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 7 to 8 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Paul was born July 4, 1930, to William and Edna (Schweitzer) Byers, in Sioux City. He grew up and attended grade school in Allen, Neb. He graduated from Wakefield (Neb.) High School. He then attended and graduated from the University of Nebraska Dental School.

He married Elaine Fleetwood on March 28, 1953, in Wakefield. She passed away June 28, 1986. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1957 and was discharged in 1958. He was a dentist in Wakefield for 30 years, retiring in 1994.

On Nov. 2, 1986, he married Norma Moltsau in Wakefield. The couple moved to Sergeant Bluff in 1998.

He served in the Wakefield School board for 10 years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Order of the Eastern Star, the Lions Club and the Fire and Rescue Squad in Wakefield. He was a Sunday School teacher for several years. He was a member of Shepherd of Peace Lutheran Church. He enjoyed fishing and woodworking.

Survivors include his wife, Norma; a son and his wife, Daniel and Robin Byers of Lincoln, Neb.; a daughter and her husband, Dilynne and Mark Lucey of Lincoln; a stepson and his wife, Dave and Jody Wax of Sergeant Bluff; a stepdaughter and her husband, Brenda and Scott Smith of Sergeant Bluff; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother and his wife, William and Yvonne Byers of The Dalles, Ore.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Elaine; and a son, Dennis Byers.
