Esther Elizabeth Hayes, 89, of Sioux City died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, at a Sioux City nursing home.

Services will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Nelson-Berger Funeral Chapel.

Esther was born Dec. 21, 1915, in Winnebago, Neb., the daughter of Elizabeth and Dexter Welch. She was raised in Sioux City and graduated from Central High School.

She married Virgil C. Hayes in Elk Point, S.D., on Nov. 15, 1938.

She was a longtime member of Mayflower Congregational Church.

Survivors include her husband, Virgil; two daughters, Sandra and her husband Borje Pettersson of Sioux City and Sherry Peterson of South Lake Tahoe, Calif.; a son, Dennis Hayes of Orangevale, Calif.; two sisters, Ruth Macoubrie of Harper Woods, Mich., and Marcela Welch of Sioux City; six grandchildren and their spouses, Scott and Romi Pettersson and Stephen and Janet Pettersson, all of Sioux City, Beth and Michael Martinazzi of Fresno, Calif., Dana and David Stabenow of South Lake Tahoe, Jennifer Peterson of Sacramento, Calif., and Matthew and Melissa Hayes of Dover, Penn.; 13 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and seven brothers.
