Earl J. “Duke” King, 75, of South Sioux City died Saturday, April 26, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Becker-Hunt Funeral Home in South Sioux City with the Rev. Terry Tomlinson, pastor of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, officiated. Burial will be in Dakota City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present after 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. King was born December 25, 1921, in Wessington Springs, South Dakota, the son of Ernest and Estella (Perkins) King. He married Geneva Kauble in 1942, in Wessington Springs.

He operated a car lot in Huron, South Dakota until 1966. He then was a car salesman for many years in Sioux City before owning and operating Duke’s Used Cars in South Sioux City. He married Betty J. (Conklin) Russell in March 1967, in Elk Point, South Dakota. He retired in 1988.

He was a member of the Eagles Club in South Sioux City.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters and their husbands, Brenda and Ron Chapman of Sioux City and Linda and Paul Robbie of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, three step-daughters, Connie and her husband Larry Kafton of Mapleton, Iowa, Rita McManigal of Decatur, Nebraska and Jody Russell and her husband Jim Price of South Sioux City, a brother and his wife, Willis and elaine of Belle Fouche, South Dakota; three sisters, Velva McHenry of Wessington Springs, Neva Stone of Rapid City, South Dakota and Maxine and her husband Les Meeker of Deadwood, South Dakota; 17 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Dwight and Vernon, and a sister Thelma Newcomb.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Marty Scheid, Billy Binkerd, Jeffrey, Christopher, Eric and Gregory Kafton, Leslie and Jenty Joe McManigal.
