Joseph Sulzbach, A Pioneer Builder Dies
Passes Away of the Grip at the Age of 83 Years – Short Illness

Joseph Sulzbach, a resident of Sioux City for the last 33 years and a builder and contractor during the Sioux City boom days, died yesterday morning at his home, 518 Main Street, of the grip. He was 83 years old.

Mr. Sulzbach had been ill for only four days.

The deceased was born in Germany and came to this country in 1851, settling in Galena, Illinois. It was here he learned the stone mason’s trade and for many years was foreman of construction stonework on Illinois Central railroad bridges.

He was married to Miss Caroline Wegener shortly after coming to this country. His wife died in 1893. Mr. Sulzbach started contracting work in the early ‘60s at Fort Dodge. He came to Sioux City in 1879 and erected many landmarks including the following buildings; The old Gilman block, Schulein and Breun blocks on Fourth Street, the old Sanborn & Follett wholesale building on Douglas Street, the Groninger building, the linseed oil works and the Haskins Bros’ soap works. His son, Fred J. Sulzbach, took charge of the business 20 years ago, when the father retired.

Two sons, Fred J. and Henry Sulzbach, of Sioux City and two daughters, Mrs. G. W. Bullinger of Concord, Nebraska and Mrs. Charles Ahrens, of Sioux City survive. A sister, Mrs. Freda Wasser of Emmetsburg, Iowa and a granddaughter, Miss Caroline Mueller, living in Fort Dodge, also survive.

The funeral services will be held at 2:30 o’clock Tuesday afternoon at the German Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Floyd Cemetery.

Sulzbach – The funeral services of Joseph Sulzbach were held yesterday afternoon at the German Lutheran Church. Burial was in Floyd Cemetery. The pallbearers were George Sonneborn, Gustaf Gruner, Ernest Kruck, John Waffer, John Lotz and William Kruck.
