Beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Carol Lynn (Koetters) Peterson, 82, of Sloan, Iowa died Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at CHI Health - Bergan Mercy Hospital in Omaha, NE.

Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Monday, October 15, 2018 at Skien Lutheran Church, rural Sloan, Iowa with Pastor Craig Bock officiating. Burial will be in Westfork Township Cemetery, Climbing Hill, Iowa. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service, Onawa, Iowa.

She was born November 27, 1935 in Sioux City, Iowa to William and Veigh (Garner) Koetters. She spent her childhood in Sioux City and graduated from Central High School and attended Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska. She married Donald F. Peterson on May 19, 1955 in Elk Point, South Dakota. They resided in Sioux City, in the suburb of Riverside. In 1957, Carol and their older daughter, Wendy, went to Orleans, France for a year to be with her husband, Donald, who was stationed there in the U.S. Army. The family moved to Sloan, Iowa in 1966.

Carol was active in the Order of the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron in the Sloan, Iowa, Athena Chapter. She taught Sunday School, led the Cherub Choir, and performed as a soloist at Skien Lutheran Church for many years. Carol was the first woman elected to the Westwood School Board, and served for three years. When her children were school age, she went back to school at Western Iowa Tech, to earn certification to work in physicians’ offices or hospitals. She worked 10 years at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa, Iowa as the Director of Medical Records. She completed a two-year Associate Degree program to become an Accredited Record Technician. Carol earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Health Information Management when she graduated from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. Carol sat for and passed the examination to become a Registered Health Information Administrator.

In 1985 she moved to Cleburne, Texas and worked as the Director of Medical Records for Harris Methodist Corporation at Walls Regional Hospital. In 1990 Carol worked for Fort Worth Rehabilitation Hospital as Director of Medical Records. Carol and Don moved to Springfield, Missouri in 1994 where she was Director of Quality Assurance at Springfield Community Hospital, and then the Assistant Administration at Springfield Care Center. In 1996 she and Don moved to Big Spring, Texas where she worked as Director of Medical Records at Scenic Mountain Medical Center for 5 years. She retired in 2001. Carol and Don returned to live in Sloan, Iowa.

Carol Lynn loved to write, draw, and sing. She sold her first painting when she was 17 years old. That watercolor was exhibited at the Sioux City Art Center. Her paintings, Birds and Feathers, received awards from the Big Spring Art Association. Carol studied under Dr. Robert Lesh at Wayne State College and Miss Mable Boe at Central High School. Carol brought her art into her professional life by creating posters and murals.

Carol Lynn was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, William Koetters and David Koetters; and her daughter, Nancy Lynn.

She is survived by her cherished husband, Don of Sloan, IA; her children (spouses), Wendell Annette (John) Bonaiuto of Lincoln, NE, and Donald Ray (Lori) Peterson of Sioux City, IA; brother, George (Roma) Koetters of Des Moines, IA; sister-in-law, Alice Koetters of Kearney, NE; two grandsons, Hoss Melton and Leighton Peterson; and one great-granddaughter.
