Vicki Mathiesen died peacefully in her sleep with her husband by her side Sunday morning, Sept. 30, 2018, at her beloved riverfront home in Dakota City, after a nearly two-year courageous battle with cancer.

A celebration of life will be 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel in Sioux City, with the Rev. Catie Newman officiating. Private family burial will be at a later date. Visitation with family will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Lunch will be served after the service. Online condolences may be expressed at www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Vicki was born on Thursday afternoon, Aug. 19, 1948, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Sioux City, to Clarence and Verna (Hingst) Petersen of Salix, Iowa. She was baptized on April 17, 1949, at the Methodist Church in Salix. She attended Salix Elementary School and graduated high school in 1966 from Westwood High in Sloan, Iowa. She also graduated from Stewart School of Hairstyling and Cosmetology in 1967.

As a teenager, Vicki grew up on a farm and learned good work ethics by hoeing beans and detasseling corn. As an adult, she worked for 10 years at Zenith, making many friends and having the weekends off to spend with her family. After Zenith, she along with her husband founded and owned Concrete Raising Service, where she was active for more than 30 years working on the job sites as well as in the office. She was a pioneer for women working in traditionally male-held jobs.

Vicki married Kerry "Fred" Mathiesen on March 17, 1969, in Sioux City, after only three months dating, which turned into a 49-year happy marriage.

Vicki was an outdoors person who loved planting, growing flowers and taking care of her big yard. She fed and made friends with many squirrels and birds over the years and loved watching the wild life and nature in her river front yard. She also enjoyed her annual fall foliage camping trip to Lake Superior in her motor home with Fred and her dogs and cats. She had a special love for her little black Chihuahua who she lost last year and broke her heart. She and her grandsons, Matthew and Bradley, liked to hang out and play cards.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Fred Mathiesen of Dakota City; two daughters, Kerrie Sue Lentz and her husband, Brian of Ponca, Neb., and Holly Easton and her husband, Rick of Sioux City; two grandsons; two stepgrandsons; a stepgranddaughter; four great-stepgranddaughters; her sister, Gwen Hodges of Salix; brother, Russ Petersen of Salix; brother-in-law, Don Petersen of Ponca; mother-in-law, Anne Mathiesen of Ponca; three nieces; three nephews; and many cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister in-law, Sherry Peterson; brother-in-law, Jerry Hodges; father-in-law, Darrell Mathiesen; and many aunts and uncles.
