William H. Hicks, 92, of Sioux City, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2018, at a local hospital.

Abiding by his wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family graveside prayer will be given at a later date. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel has assisted the family with arrangements.

William was born on Feb. 9, 1926, in Jackson, Neb., to Daniel and Corabelle (Cole) Hicks. After receiving his education in the Siouxland area, William joined the United States Navy from 1943 until 1947. Following his honorable discharge, William settled in Wisconsin, where he worked in the construction industry.

While in Wisconsin, William divorced his first wife, Betty June, and his second wife, Marvel passed away in 1988. William was a general contractor, owning his own business during his later years in Wisconsin, but upon the death of his second wife, William decided to move back to the Siouxland area, to help care for his mother. He rekindled a childhood friendship with Betty Lou Lindquist while back in Sioux City, and on Dec. 14, 1990, the couple married in Quimby, Iowa. William shared his construction skills through volunteering with the S.O.S organization (Save Our Seniors) here in the Sioux City area. Before his retirement at age 82, William was a security officer with Briar Cliff University for almost 10 years.

William enjoyed outdoor activities, especially caring for his garden. He would also find great joy in fishing, watching the Green Bay Packers play football, but found his greatest joy in family and friends, including his loving K-9 friends, most recently, Abby. He was a member of the Wisconsin Laborer’s Union.

William is survived by his wife, Betty Lou of Sioux City; son, Robert (Ruth) Lindquist of Quimby; daughter, Lori Harding of West Virginia; granddaughters, Danielle (Pete) Moore of Sergeant Bluff, Cally Lindquist of Cherokee, Iowa, and Dixie Jewell of Florida; grandsons, Doug Steward of Quimby, and Tony Steward of Cleghorn, Iowa; numerous other grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchilden; and special family of Sari and George Mendoza of William’s late brother, Lewis Hicks.

William was preceded in death by his parents; two wives; two brothers; and four sisters.
