Darel Ray Pennington, 90, of Sioux City, formerly of the Norfolk area, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2018, at his home in Sioux City.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, at Calvary Lutheran Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. James Travis officiating. Military honors will be conducted at the church. Private burial will be in Christ Lutheran Cemetery at Norfolk. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Online condolences may be expressed at www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Darel was born June 20, 1928, in Norfolk, to Eddie Ray and Clara (Kiepke) Pennington. His father worked mainly as a farmer, but held various jobs in town. Darel attended grade school at Christ Lutheran School. He served overseas in Korea during the Korean War.

Darel graduated from Wayne State College with a bachelor degree in education. He taught in the Randolph country schools and the Norfolk Public schools before moving to Sioux City. He worked for years in a local florist shop and then began his many years at the Jewish Synagogue doing various jobs.

He was an active member of the Calvary Lutheran Church in Sioux City. He loved his dog, family, socializing with his many friends, reading and speaking German whenever possible. He devoted a lot of his time to his community and to his church.

Darel is survived by his many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Dean Pennington; sister, Cleone Dietloff; and his parents, Clara (Kiepke) Pennington and Eddie Ray Pennington.
