Formerly Sioux City

Sheryl L Newman-Overton, 56, formerly of Sioux City, was called home on May 27, 2018. She was the wife of Michael Overton. Making each other's dreams come true, they shared 20 years of marriage together.

A celebration of life memorial will be planned later this summer.

Born in Sioux City, she was the daughter of proud parents, Dean and Janice Petersen. She graduated from East High School before enlisting in the U.S. Army. Later in life, at the age of 50, Sheryl graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor of science in information technology with a specialization in information assurance and security from Capella University, an accomplishment both she and her family were very proud of.

Sheryl belonged to the Salvation Army. Knowing Christ allowed her to be the best version of herself. She knew that her faith in him would carry her anywhere.

Sheryl's greatest love was her 18 grandchildren. She loved them through her last breath. She enjoyed sending and receiving mail with them and always made each one feel special.

She is survived by her true love, Michael Overton; children, Richard (Dana) Newman of Virginia, Shonna (Joe) Swartz of Iowa, Zachary (Crystal) Overton of Virginia, Jesse (Brian) Kasky of Virginia, Matthew (Sasha) Kalasnik of Florida, and Audra (TJ) Young of Arizona; her parents, Dean and Janice Petersen; grandchildren, Rylee, Wyatt, Norah, Gwendolyn, Savannah, Kelcie, Zachary, Isaac, Liam, Layne, Colton, Pyper, Amanda, Brandon, Cameron, Jacob, Laney, and Talja; siblings, Debbie Petersen, Dan (Robyn) Petersen, Steve (Bonnie) Petersen, Diane Prichard, and Dave Petersen; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Sheryl was preceded in death by her grandparents, Kenneth and Irene Leverson, and Paul and Edna Petersen.

Although Sheryl ultimately lost her battle with stage IV Ovarian Cancer, she fought tirelessly for her own life and relished any opportunity to raise awareness about this horrible disease. She volunteered to tell her story on different educational panels, with local newspapers, national magazines and TV news segments. One in 75 women will be diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer in her lifetime. Please honor Sheryl by telling someone you know the signs and symptoms of Ovarian Cancer, you could save her life. A pap smear does not detect nor test for Ovarian Cancer. Symptoms include, bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, trouble eating or feeling full quickly, and feeling the need to urinate urgently or often.
