Thomas William Martin 1863 – 1939

Funeral services for Thomas William Martin, 75, who served under the flags of the United States and Great Britain during his early life, will be conducted at 9 a.m. Friday in the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Rev. Newman Flanagan will officiate, and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery under the direction of the O’Toole-Gunn Funeral Home.

Members of the Blessed Sacrament confraternity will meet in the home 3060 Myrtle at 7:30 o’clock tonight to recite the rosary.

Mr. Martin died Wednesday afternoon in his home after a long illness. He had lived in Sioux city 54 years and operated the first automobile paint shop here.

Born September 28, 1863 in England, Mr. Martin served in a palace guard regiment during Queen Victoria’s reign. He came to the United States and directly to Sioux City when he was 21. Employed first as a painter in the Dineen wagon shop here, Mr. Martin later opened his own paint shop. He was married here in 1893.

He was a member of national guard company L here five years before serving in the 52nd regiment of the United States in the Spanish American War. He was a past commander of Maj. William A. Kirk Camp, U.S.W.V. and was a chapter member of Woodlawn Camp 2, W.O.W.

Mr. Martin is survived by his widow, Theresa, a daughter, Mrs. Kathleen Schietzelt and son, Thomas Martin Jr., both of Sioux City; two sisters, Mrs. Zep Panplin and Miss Martin of London, England and five grandchildren.
