Crash Kills 1, Injuries 2 Men

Richard C. Heck Dies When Car Smashes Into Poles

Richard Christine Heck, 24, 2601 W. 19th Street, World War 2 Veteran, was killed and two other men were injured when the car in which they were riding missed a turn and crashed into a telephone pole and an electric light-pole early Sunday morning at W. Fourth and Center Street.

The injured men, Fred H. Brubaker, 21, 517 Center Street, suffered cuts on the face and arms and a chest injury and Donald Carroll, 22, 1617 Center Street, suffered cuts and bruises and a serious right are injury. They were taken in Mannings ambulance to St. Vincent Hospital where their condition was reported as “satisfactory” Monday.

Heck died on his way to the hospital in an ambulance.

Brubaker late Monday was removed from the hospital by Detectives A.A. Buccino and Leo Kennedy to the City Jail, where he was held on an open charge.

Brubaker Driving

Police identified Mr. Brubaker as driver of the car which was traveling west in W. Fourth Street at the time of the accident. According to police the car missed the turn near the Log Cabin inn after which it struck a telephone pole and a light pole. The poles were moved several inches and an electric light was knocked loose from the post.

Mr. Heck, who was thrown out of the automobile, suffered a skull fracture, right leg fracture and a jaw fracture.

Detective L.L. Peterson, who was on his way home, said the automobile carrying the three men passed him in W. Fourth Street only a few minutes before the crash. He found the wrecked car as he rounded the corner at Center Street.

In Army Three Years

Mr. Heck was born August 23, 1921, at Redfield, South Dakota. He had resided in Sioux City nearly all his life. He attended Sacred Heart parochial School and was graduated from Central High School in 1940. He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church.

He served more than three years in the medical detachment of the army and had crossed the ocean 18 times bringing wounded from France and North Africa. He was discharged in December, 1945.

Survivors are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Heck of Sioux City and three brothers, Eugene E. and Clarence M., both of Sioux City and Lawrence P. in the navy at Norfolk, Virginia.

Funeral services will be held at 8 a.m. Wednesday at St. Boniface Catholic Church. Rev. Frederick Beck will officiate and interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. The Veterans of Foreign Wars will have charge of a graveside service.

The rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Manning’s Chapel.
