Dr. John Hancock Lawrence 1864 – 1946

Dr. John Hancock Lawrence, 82, 3514 Jackson Street, died in a hospital here Tuesday following amputation of a leg which was fractured when he was struck by an automobile last December 23. He had been a practicing physician here for 42 years.

Dr. Lawrence was born April 19, 1864, at Fitchburg, Michigan. He was graduated in 1888 from the medical department at the University of Michigan, where he was valedictorian of his class. After a year’s internship in Grace Hospital, Detroit, he practiced at Storm Lake, Iowa from 1891 to 1904 when he came to Sioux City.

He married Aurelia B. Wirick of Storm Lake February 2, 1892. She died three years ago.

Dr. Lawrence was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and belonged to Landmark Lodge 103, A.F. & A.M., Sioux City Consistory, Elks Club and Rose Croix Chapter of the Eastern Star.

Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. P.M. Mulford and Mrs. F. R. Polly, both of Sioux City, a son, John Hancock, Jr., of Freewater, Oregon and five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Westcott-Doughty-Chandler Chapel. Rev. Joseph E. Steele, pastor emeritus of Mayflower Congregational Church will officiate.

Masonic services will be conducted by members of Landmark Lodge 103, A.F. & A.M. at the grave. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers are: Dr. P.E. Sawyer, Dr. H.P. White, A. V. Converse, J.E. Fitzgerald, O.W. Harvey and Ralph Brubacher.

Active pallbearers will be Raymond Whitmer, Roy Schaefer, Carroll Jandt, Clarmont Goodnow, F.C. Hastings and F. Roger Polly.
