Theodore "Ted" R. Whitehead passed away July 1, 2005, in Truth or Consequences, N.M. at the age of 73.

A 9 a.m. graveside service will be held Thursday at Westlawn-Hillcrest Cemetery in Omaha, Neb.

Born in Sioux City, Iowa, on Jan. 26, 1932, he was the son of Charles and Inez (Mott) Whitehead.

Ted was a veteran of the U.S. Marines, having served during the Korean War, and was the recipient of the Purple Heart, Korean Service Medal with five stars, Combat Action Medal, Navy Presidential Unit Citation Medal, Fleet Marine Force Medal, National Defense Medal, Korean Presidential Unit Citation Medal and United Nations Medal. He also was a member of the V.F.W. in Omaha, Neb.

Traveling the old, scenic highways was one of Ted's favorite things to do. A retired house painter, he also loved to paint as a hobby, dabbling in oil, acrylics and watercolors. All of his life, he was passionate about playing his banjos and listening to bluegrass music. He also had a deep appreciation for poetry, memorizing and reciting it.

Ted's family and close friends were paramount in his life. His legacy remains in his grandchildren whom he adored.

He leaves behind two sons, Mark and his wife Margo Whitehead of Sioux City, Iowa; and Michael Whitehead; and four daughters, Connie Gerken of Omaha, Neb., Gina Casanova of Tucson, Ariz., Sonya Whitehead and husband Paul Veverka of Tucson, Ariz. and Denise and husband Rob Oldach of Colorado Springs, Colo. He also is also survived by his grandchildren: Troy, Rachael, Aaron, Adam, Megan, Lee, Chareese, Paul, Ian, Kai, Sarah and Michael; and by his sisters, Mona Kenny of Phoenix, Florene Waldher of Spokane, Washington, Esther Pomeroy of Omaha, Neb, Karen Krueger of Ontario, Canada.
