Vera M. Sands, 80, of Sioux City died Sunday, July 10, 2005, at Countryside Retirement Home following an extended illness.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with the Rev. Martha Anderson of Trimble United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

Vera M. Sands was born Oct. 31, 1924, in Defiance, Iowa, the daughter of Harry L. and Mabel A. (White) Chase Sr.

She married Marvin J. "Mark" Sands on March 6, 1944, in Sioux City.

Vera was employed at Otis Radio in Hawarden, Iowa, for a time. The couple moved to Sioux City in 1969 where she was employed with Zenith Corp. for several years. Later, she was a nurse's aide at Westwood Nursing and Rehab Center. More recently she owned and operated a professional cleaning business.

She was an avid gardener. She enjoyed flowers and loved to bake.

Survivors include her husband, Mark; four children, Larry Sands and his wife, Patricia, of Le Mars, Iowa, Sharon Beurer and her husband, Len, of San Antonio, Texas, Ron Sands and his wife, Grace, of Merrill, Iowa, and Debbie Sands of Sioux Falls, S.D.; a brother, Harry L. Chase Jr. of Tucson, Ariz.; two sisters, Alice Pratt of Kingsley, Iowa, and Hazel Bollin and her husband, Doug, of Kingsley; and six grandsons, Troy Sands, Todd Sands, Julie Locke, Scott Sands, Justin Sands and Michael Essig.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Wesley; a sister, Ileta Ernest, and a sister in infancy, Martha.

Casket bearers will be Todd Sands, Scott Sands, Michael Essig, Chad DeRaad, Len Beurer, Steven Taylor, Dennis Bollin and Corey DeRaad.

Memorials may be directed to the American Alzheimer's Association.
