Wendy Garrett Lego, 69, of Sioux City, passed away Friday, April 27, 2018.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 4600 Hamilton Blvd, in Sioux City. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Online condolences may be given at www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Wendy was born on Feb. 27, 1949, in Philadelphia, Pa., to C. Dendy and Eleanor (Haywood) Garrett. She moved often in her childhood with her pastor father, living in Oskaloosa, Iowa, Edgewood, Md., and then Kalona and Des Moines, Iowa. She was a proud 1966 graduate of Des Moines East High School. She met her husband, Brad, while attending Morningside College, where she graduated in 1970. She also received a master of arts in teaching in 1971 from Morningside.

Wendy and Brad were married on Aug. 21, 1971, and she began a 36-year teaching career at Crescent Park Elementary School, teaching primarily third grade. The staff at Crescent Park as well as its students and parents were like another family to her. An even bigger family was her church. An active member of First Congregational UCC, she sang in the choir, served on many committees, and served as the church librarian.

She was a member of Chapter IA, PEO, belonged to two book clubs, served a term on the Sioux City Museum Board of Trustees, and was a former member of Junior League. Brad and Wendy were co-presidents of the West High Booster Club Board and active West High supporters. She served on the CROP Walk Steering Committee for 16 years.

She loved reading and music. Brad and she loved to travel the United States and they cherished their trip to London in 2007. Friends were an important part of her life and going out for coffee and lunch with them was always special.

Her grandsons were a huge part of her life despite the distance between them. They traveled to New Jersey often to see them, and to Georgia when they moved there in 2017. She loved FaceTiming with them.

Left to remember her include her husband, Brad; daughter, Caroline (Jose) Munoz of Flowery Branch, Ga.; son, Garrett Lego of San Jose, Calif.; grandsons, Maximo and Sebastian Munoz; brothers, Jim (Kathy Hannum) Garrett of Waukon, Iowa, Doug Garrett of Colfax, Iowa, and Matthew (Lisa) Garrett of San Jose; sister-in-law, Carol (Paul) Lutz of Marietta, Ga.; eight nieces and nephews; and dearest friend, Joyce Fisher.

Preceding her in death were her parents; and sister, Kathleen Garrett.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Sioux City Public Schools Foundation (funds will be set aside specifically for reading materials and books for new teachers setting up their classrooms), 627 Fourth St., Sioux City, IA 51101, and First Congregational United Church of Christ and directed to the library or music program.

Many thanks to the staff at June E. Nylen Cancer Center and UnityPoint St. Luke's fourth floor oncology for their love and care.
