John W. "Jack" Raymond, 80, of Sioux City, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2018, at a local care facility following a brief illness.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Faith United Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. David Koehler officiating. Per his wishes, the body will be cremated following the service. Inurnment of his ashes will be in Calvary Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be 3 to 7 p.m. today, with the family present 5 to 7 p.m. and a time of sharing held at 6:30 p.m., at Larkin Chapel Christy-Smith Funeral Homes on Outer Drive.

Jack was born in Sioux City, on July16, 1937, the son of Benjamin and Ruth (Warnholtz) Raymond. He attended Sioux City Community Schools, graduating from Sioux City East High School in 1955. Jack attended Iowa State University for a year before serving in the U.S. Air Force for four years, serving in Pakistan during that time. He then returned to Iowa State and graduated with his degree in electronics engineering.

After graduating,he worked for McDonnell Aircraft in St. Louis, Mo. He returned to Sioux City in 1967 and began teaching in the electronics department at Western Iowa Tech Community College, a position he kept until his retirement in 2000.

He met the love of his life, Vanita Catherine Blum, at Western Iowa Tech Community College. They were united in marriage on July 6, 1968 at the old St. Michael's Catholic Church in Sioux City. Vanita preceded him in death on July 19, 2016.

Jack was a life-long learner, reading books and magazines on science and technology. After retirement, he continued to tinker with electronics and enjoyed working in his wood shop. He loved watching baseball, especially the Minnesota Twins, and attending his grandchildren's ballgames. Jack was always up for a good game of cribbage with his family, and was once just one point away from a perfect hand.

He is survived by his son, David and his wife, Andrea of Sioux City; his daughters, Jeanne of Minneapolis, Sharon Brown and her husband, Andy of Sioux City, Theresa Raymond of Sioux City, and Patty Raymond and her partner, Alontay Erving of Sioux City; his five grandchildren, Alaric and Caleb Brown, and Daniel, Nicole, and Ben Raymond; his brother, Richard "Dick" Raymond of Worthington, Minn.; sister-in-law, Barb Raymond; and several nieces and nephews.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Vanita; an infant daughter, Christine; his brother, Tom; and an infant sister, Shirley.
