SERGEANT BLUFF -- Lowell Veril Lindberg, 85, of Sergeant Bluff passed peacefully in his sleep Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Craig Bock of St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Rev. Arnette Pint of Community United Methodist Church of Sergeant Bluff officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel, followed by Masonic services conducted by Morningside Masonic Lodge 615.

Lowell was born April 7, 1919, in Fosston, Minn., the son of William Arthur and Helga Maria (Lindfors) Lindberg. He grew up and attended school in Warren, Minn., and graduated from Warren High School in 1937. He attended Iowa State University.

He married Viola Louise Christensen on Aug. 5, 1939, in Beltrami County, Minn. She died Nov. 5, 1956. He worked in the creamery business at Cass Lake, Minn., before entering the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. Upon returning from the service, he worked in the creamery business in Grand Forks, N.D., before moving to his wife's family farm near Sergeant Bluff and farmed from 1950 to 1958. He started the Lindberg Variety Store in Sergeant Bluff in 1958 and served as a mail carrier and school bus driver for the Sergeant Bluff-Luton School District. He married Alice Evans on April 18, 1958, in Sioux City. She died April 26, 2003.

He was a member of St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sioux City, a longtime member of American Legion Post 662 of Sergeant Bluff, where he served as the post's service officer and a member of Morningside Masonic Lodge.

His hobbies included square dancing, playing cards, hunting, fishing and spending time at Lake Okoboji with family and friends.

Survivors include two daughters, Andree and her husband, Don Tollefson, of Waterloo, Iowa, and Mary Ann Shupe of Sergeant Bluff; a son and his wife, Richard and Karen Lindberg of Sergeant Bluff; an adopted daughter and her husband, Glenda and Loras Helle of Sergeant Bluff; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a special friend, Laura Ramage of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; a brother and his wife, William A. Jr. and Irene Lindberg of Clintonville, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wives, Viola L. Lindberg and Alice Lindberg; his parents; an infant daughter, Catherine Lindberg; and a brother, Burton Lindberg.

Pallbearers will be Troy Lindberg, Dave Weber, Dave Radilan, Rob Shupe, Chris Dolphin and Fred Busey.

Memorials may be directed to American Legion Post 662 of Sergeant Bluff.
