John C. "Jay" Burke, 72, of Savage, Minn., formerly of Sioux City, passed peacefully in his sleep after a brief battle with cancer on Monday, Nov. 8, 2004, at a hospice facility in Elko, Minn.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Prior Lake, Minn., with the Rev. Tom Sieg officiating. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Ballard Funder Funeral Home in Prior Lake. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Friday at the church.

Jay was born Feb. 2, 1932, in Wakonda, S.D., the son of Francis LeRoy "Roy" Burke and Elizabeth G. "Betty" (McIntyre) Burke. The family moved from Wakonda to Sioux City in 1942. He graduated from Heelan High School in 1951 and soon after joined the U.S. Air Force. He served most of his four-year tour in Japan.

After his discharge from the U.S. Air Force, he trained as an air traffic controller at the Minneapolis Center and continued as a controller until his retirement in 1982.

He married Margaret Ann Schiebe in Freedom, Wis., on May 2, 1959. He was very proud of his Scottish and Irish heritage and was a member of the Clan McIntyre.

He was very active in cross country skiing and became a cross country ski official with the U.S. Skiing Association. He participated as an official at the Lake Placid Olympics.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Margaret "Muggs"; two daughters, Susan Burke Jordahl of Apple Valley, Minn., and Kelly and her husband, Jack Sears of Harney, N.D.; two sons and their wives, John and Laura of Milwaukee, Wis., and Michael and Amy of Bloomington, Minn.; a brother and his wife, Ronald and Joanne of Loveland, Colo.; two sisters, Elizabeth "Betty" Kane of San Diego, Calif., and Marilyn and her husband, Walter Zyzda of Sioux City; six grandchildren, Isaac and Claire Jordahl, Madison and Tanis Sears and Peyton and Jacob Burke; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
