Floyd Counter, 87, of Sioux City died Friday, Nov. 19, 2004, at his residence after a short illness.

There will be a Trisagion prayer service at 7 p.m. today at Anderson-Perasso Funeral Home, with the Rev. Thomas Begley officiating. Private family services will be held at a later date.

Floyd was born Oct. 13, 1917, in Sioux Falls, S.D., the son of Theodore and Susan (Jackson) Counter. He was raised in Merrill, Iowa.

In September of 1942, he married Florence Haddad. In June of 1943, he entered the U.S. Army during World War II, serving his country proudly in France, Germany, Belgium and Holland until December of 1945. Upon returning to civilian life, the couple made their home in Sioux City. He was a professional truck driver until he retired in 1980.

He enjoyed dancing, traveling, hunting and playing cards. In recent years, he loved to watch old westerns, relax on the front porch, visit with family and friends and feed the friendly squirrels and birds.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Florence, of Sioux City; three sons, Ronald, Keith and Kevin, all of Sioux City; three daughters and their husbands, Kathy and Wally Reid, of Dakota Dunes, Renee and Gary Swenson of Sioux City and Rhonda and Kevin Kelley of Overland Park, Kan.; two brothers, William Counter of Plainfield, Ind. and Vern Counter of Houston, Texas; nine grandchildren, Ryan Puttman, Aaron Broermann, Travis Broermann, Jason Broermann, Joshua Counter, Ali Counter, Ronnie Counter, Dani Kelley and Joe Kelley; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Rodney; his parents; five brothers; and a sister.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in his name.
