Ronald Ray Hinkel, 81, of Sioux City, passed away Saturday, December 9, 2017 at his residence. Services will be held 12:30 pm, Friday, December 15, 2017 at Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City, officiated by Rev. Tom Lo Van. A visitation will be held 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Thursday, December 14, 2017 at the funeral home. Private family burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery prior to the service on Friday.

Ray was born on February 11, 1936 in Pisgah, Iowa to William and Grace (Rustin) Hinkel. He grew up in Moorhead, IA and graduated high school in 1954. Ray enlisted into the United States Army following high school (Dec 1954 - Dec 1956) and later was in the Air National Guard (Dec 1975 - May 1994) where he retired from service.

Ray married Janet M. Wenzel on July 19, 1959 in Sioux City. He worked for AGP Ag Processing, and several packing houses in Sioux City.

Ray was a hard working, family man who never met a stranger. He was known to be a bit of a jokester with a quick wit. His family will miss his one liners. He was proud of his kids and grandkids. He loved spending time with his family, and attending the events his kids and grandkids were involved in. He loved cheering for the Iowa Hawkeyes whenever they were on tv.He also enjoyed fishing and was a member of Morningside Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Janet M. Hinkel; children, Ronda (Chris) Mathewson of Peoria, IL, Jill Hinkel of Sioux City, and William "Bill" (Nikki) Hinkel of Hinton; grandchildren, Carol (Sean), Cole, Katie, Ethan, Skyler (Sadie), Sarah, Kayla, Ronda, and Olivia; great granddaughter, Leona; sisters, Marilyn (Francis) Mumm of Dunlap, IA, Janet Hinkel, and Joyce Hinkel, both of Moorhead, IA; several nieces and nephews and in-laws.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant son; and brothers-in-laws and sisters-in-laws.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Michael Harder and staff, as well as home healthcare nurse Stefani Moser-Wigton for their care and support.
