Smithland, Iowa-- Emery D. Carlson, 58, died Thursday at his residence in Smithland of a respiratory illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in St. John’s Lutheran Church in Climbing Hill. The Rev. Walter Resner will officiate. Burial will be in the Little Sioux Cemetery. A prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Walter Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Mr. Carlson was born September 9, 1923, in Castana. He married Violet Sands on October 1, 1949, in Midway, near Battle Creek. The couple farmed in the Anthon-Oto area and the Smithland area. Because of ill health he retired in 1976. The couple moved into Smithland in 1979. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife of Smithland, his father, William of Smithland; one brother, Rollin of Hornick; one sister, Mrs. Max (Marjorie) Smith of Rodney.
