Sioux City Journal
5 January 2000

Lucile Bernice Burke, 90, of Petaluma, California, formerly of Sioux City, died Saturday, January 1, 2000 at her residence.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Chapel of the Lakes in Lakeport, California with the Rev. Philip Ryan officiating. Burial will be in Hartley Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 7 p.m. today, with a rosary at 7 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

Lucile was born January 16, 1909, as the first of 12 at Ravinia, S.D. She graduated nurses training on May 5, 1930 from Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee, Iowa. She subsequently worked at Cherokee State Hospital and as a private duty nurse in Mankato, Minnesota.

She married Philip Burke on July 27, 1945 and they were married for 47 years when he was deceased in February of 1992.

They first lived in Wassau, Nebr., where they owned and operated a hardware store and had a small farm. They moved to Sioux City in 1950 and remained there until they moved to Lakeport, California in 1972. Lucile was a homemaker during her entire married life, but was never idle.

She was active in the Catholic Church circles and volunteered at Blessed Sacrament Catholic School in Sioux City. After moving to Lakeport, she was also active with St. Mary’s Ladies. She especially enjoyed preparing for and participating in the Christmas bazaars. More than anything Lucile loved spending time with family and friends. She would be the first to help in time of need. Lucile loved to sew and bake. She participated for many years in a garden with her brother, Bob, and each fall spent weeks canning and freezing fruits and vegetables, as they had done during the depression years in Iowa and South Dakota.

Lucile moved to Petaluma, California, October 1, 1998 with her daughter, Sharon and a son-in-law, Jerry. She kept in close contact with all the friends she made over the years, each of whom she cherished.

She passed away unexpectedly in the early hours of January 1, 2000.

Lucile was a very loving mother and grandmother. Her passing is a loss to all her family.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Sharon and Jerry Bojanski of Petaluma; two grandchildren, Philip Wieck of Rohnert Park, California and Robin Reynolds of Sioux City; three great-grandchildren, Erin, Heather and Christopher Reynolds of Sioux City, two brothers, Jim Sadler of Fullerton, California and Howard Sadler of Cherokee, Iowa, two sisters, Mary Crees of Grants Pass, Oregon and Jeanne Johnson of Highland Ranch, Colorado and numerous nieces and nephews.
