Funeral services for William Callaghan, 75, were held in The Methodist Church, Friday afternoon, the Rev. A. J. Barkley officiating. Rev. A. Pruitt, a former pastor, assisted A quartet—Mrs. R.R. Hall, Mrs. Arnold Richardson, Fred Cory and John H. Bale, accompanied by Miss Gertrude Bale at the piano—sang The Old Rugged Cross,” “Jesus Savior, Pilot Me” and “Abide with Me.”

Pallbearers were Chas A. Smith, George Kelsey, Donald Bennett M.W. Jones, B.F. Brown and L. S. Gambs. Interment was in the Smithland Cemetery under the direction of the Willman Funeral Home in Rodney.

William Callaghan, son of Sylvester and Mary Callaghan was born in the state of New York, April 11, 1868 and died at his home in Smithland early Wednesday morning, January 5, of a heart attack.

With his parents, he came to Smithland in 1870 and has been a resident of the community for 73 years. He received his education in the local schools January 6, 1892, he was married to Edith Mae Zimmerman. To this union were born three sons.

They lived on a farm southwest of town until 1919 when they moved to a small farm at the edge of Smithland where he has since resided. For a number of years, he was in charge of the township road maintenance. In later years he was a drag man until failing health compelled him to retire. Mrs. Callaghan died November 22, 1925.

Since that time his youngest son, Clifford and family has kept the home for him.

Mr. Callaghan was for a number of years a member of the school board and also a trustee of the Methodist Church. He was a public spirited conscientious in all his dealings, a good neighbor, a loving husband, father and grandfather. He believed in God and was a believer and a supporter of Christianity and the church.

Surviving are the three sons, Paul and Clifford of Smithland and Claude of Tacoma, Washington, a foster daughter Mrs. Elmo Clary of Clarinda; a sister, Mrs. Claude Dawdy of Hornick, a brother, James Callaghan of Anthon and three grandchildren.
