Margaret Slowey Lamkin, 95, of Sioux City, died Friday, Aug. 18, 2017, at her residence.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, 3220 Stone Park Blvd. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, with a 4 p.m. rosary by the Catholic Daughters of the Americas at the funeral home. Online condolences may be expressed at www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Margaret was born June 17, 1922, in Yankton, S.D., daughter of Charles Slowey and Helen Irene Anderst. The family moved to Sioux City in 1930. Margaret graduated from East High School midyear 1940, and from Morningside College in midyear 1943.

She married Romain (Eddie) Lamkin on May 23, 1942, at Immaculate Conception Church. The couple have three children. He died in 2005.

Margaret was an energetic homemaker. She also worked as a caseworker for the State of Iowa Department of Social Services from 1950-1953, then returned as a caseworker for Aid to Dependent Children in 1977. She retired in 1985.

She was an active member of Blessed Sacrament Church, St. Therese Study Club, Catholic Daughters, Sioux City Federated Women’s Club, life member for the Senior Center, and a past member of the Sioux City Boat Club and Dakota Dunes Golf Club.

Margaret enjoyed volunteering with the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, was on the first Red Cross Disaster Team, was a literacy tutor for adults through a Western Iowa Tech program, was a long-time reading aide for second graders at Bryant School, and a 10-year Hospice volunteer. She sponsored two children in Guatemala, and most recently, a young Kenyan girl through the Unbound program.

She is survived by her three children, Mark (Cindy) Lamkin of Glendale, Ariz., Charles Lamkin of Overland Park, Kan., and Rita Pat (John) Hendrickson of Rochester, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Charles "Chuck" Slowey and Donald Slowey; and sister, Rita (Slowey) Taylor.
