Aasa Toft Mortensen Jensen, 97, of Sioux City, died Saturday, July 8, 2017, at her home.

Private family services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City.

Aasa was born on Feb. 25, 1920, to Karen and Mads Mortensen, near Aalborg, Denmark. Their family was later joined by a younger brother, Poul. Aasa attended school in Aalborg and became a seamstress at a local hospital.

One summer day in 1940, she met her future husband, Svend Aage Jensen, on the beach by the North Sea in Blokhus, Denmark. They later became engaged and lived through the World War II occupation before they married on Sept. 22, 1946. Svend, a ship carpenter, built their house where they lived with their daughter, Vibeke, until they were smitten by the adventure of going to America. Here, Svend became a finish carpenter for WA Klinger. He died on Christmas in 1982.

While in Sioux City, Aasa worked for 22 years at Walgreens in the sewing and Tiki Hut departments. She also worked at St. Joseph's Hospital as a scrub tech in the delivery room.

Aasa joined the Sioux City Camera Club, Carpenters Auxiliary, Scandinavian Society and was the first woman to officially become a member of the Danish Brotherhood. Aasa loved her family, her friends and her Mimi dogs. She loved to sing and dance.

Aasa is survived by her daughter, Vibeke and son-in-law, Larry Benne; her granddaughter, Lise Wagner and Lise's husband, Jimm; and her great-grandson, William.

Her parents, brother and all other contemporary family members and friends preceded her in death.
