Eugene "Gene" F. Chester, 78, of South Sioux City, passed away Wednesday, June 28, 2017, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Hope Lutheran Church in South Sioux City, with the Rev. Michael Awe officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Mohr Funeral Home in South Sioux City.

Gene was born in South Sioux City, on Dec. 5, 1938, the son of George and Elizabeth (Dreas) Chester. He graduated from South Sioux City High School in 1951.

Gene and Edith Etchison were married on Aug. 15, 1959 in Sioux City. He worked at Tyson Foods for 40 plus years.

Gene was a member of Hope Lutheran Church. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, camping, gardening, playing cards and Husker football.

Survivors include his wife, Edith Chester of South Sioux City; children, Steven (Ava) Chester of Omaha, Dawn Anderson (Carlos) of Sioux City, and Christine (Brian) Martin of Northfield, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; siblings, Shirley Patrick, LaVonne (Gary) Hoblit and Jerry (Nancy) Chester, all of South Sioux City, Karen Olejniczak of Omaha, Sharon Boyd of South Sioux City, and Georgia (Chuck) Leonard of Sioux City; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Elizabeth Chester; a brother, Gary Chester; and brothers-in-law, David Patrick and Sonny Olejniczak.
