Caryle Bates, 89, of Monticello, formerly of South Sioux City, died Wednesday, May 31, 2017, at Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following an extended illness.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church in South Sioux City, with the Rev. Stephen Niles officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City. Visitation will be 10 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the church.

Caryle Joyce Heaton was born on April 28, 1928, in Cherokee, Iowa, the daughter of Floyd and Susie O'Donnell, Heaton. Caryle graduated from the South Sioux City High School in 1946.

She married Lester Bates on May 16, 1948 at United Methodist Church in Sioux City. The couple operated the L. R. Bates Construction Company. Following their retirement, the couple wintered in Arizona. Lester preceded her in death in 2008. Caryle moved to Monticello to be near her daughter Debra in 2012.

Caryle was a member of First Presbyterian Church in South Sioux City, where she had served as an elder. She also taught Sunday School and Bible School. She served on the board of the Siouxland YMCA, where she had also worked as the membership secretary. Caryle also was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed camping, the many motorcycle trips on the Honda Goldwing, running, racquetball, and bicycling, completing eight trips on RAGBRAI.

Surviving are two children, Debra (Dan) Porter of Monticello, and Dougles (Mary) Bates of Sioux City; five grandchildren, Laura (Matt) O'Brien, Rebecca Topete, Matthew Bates, Nathaniel Bates, and Heather Wulf; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lester; a grandson, Michael Bates; a great-granddaughter; and five siblings.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church.
