Daniel John Pick, 84, of Remsen, died Tuesday, June 20, 2017, at a Sioux City hospital, surrounded by his family and loved ones, after a short illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen, with the Rev. William McCarthy officiating and Deacon Rick Roder assisting. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Remsen, with military honors will be conducted by the VFW Post 3328 and American Legion Post 220 of Remsen. Visitation with the family will be 4 to 7 p.m. today, with a rosary at 5 p.m. by the Knights of Columbus and Catholic Order of Foresters immediately followed by a vigil prayer service, all at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen. Daniel was born on Nov. 25, 1932, to Alphonse and Erma (Thiel) Pick, in rural Remsen. Daniel was educated at Union Consolidated Public School and graduated in 1951. He then attended Westmar College and Chicago Institute of Architectural Drawing. Dan enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1953 went to Germany during the Korean War. He received an honorable discharge in 1955.

Daniel married Carol Jean Pottebaum on Aug. 24, 1955 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton, Iowa. The couple resided in Remsen. Dan had worked at Remsen Farmers Coop since 1955, through various departments. In 1974, became manager of the Remsen Farmers Coop until retirement in 1996. He also sold real estate under Dan Pick Real Estate throughout his life. Carol Jean passed away on March 8, 2013.

Dan was very active. He enjoyed wood working, fishing, playing cards, storytelling, sports, watching Iowa and Iowa State athletics, and St. Mary's and Remsen-Union athletics. He enjoyed vacationing at Okoboji for the summer and in Texas for the winter.

Dan was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Catholic Order of Foresters and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Grateful for having shared his life are his six children, Roger (Paula) of Harlan, Iowa, and children, Ryan (Amy), Stephanie (Greg), and Katie (Brian), Mike (Melinda) of Ankeny, Iowa, and children, Robbie, Angie, Mikayla (fiance, Jon) and McKenzie, Ray (Lori) of Ankeny, and children, Jeff (Sarah), Nathan (Ashley), Kellie (Ron) and Alison (Ryan), Kevin of Cincinnati, Ohio, and children, Keith, Michelle (Shaun), Doug (fiancee, Colleen) and Crystal, Linda (Damon) Alvey of Scotland, S.D., and children, Ashley (fiance, Kevin) and Amber, and Brian (Lori) of Ashland, Neb., and children, Anna and Andrew; 13 great-grandchildren; sister, Doris Kolker of Remsen; and sisters-in-law, Nancy Pick of Le Mars, Iowa, Jan Pick of Sioux City, and Irma Dreckman of Pipestone, Minn.

Those waiting in heaven are his wife, Carol Jean; brothers, Glen, Joe, Jerry, and Cliff; sisters, Vera Ann in infancy, Ruth and Vera May; parents, Alphonse and Erma Pick; father-in-law, John Pottebaum; mother-in-law, Susan (Mousel) Pottebaum; and numerous brothers and sisters-in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Pallbearers will be Ryan Pick, Rob Pick, Jeff Pick, Nathan Pick, Keith Pick, Doug Pick and Andrew Pick.
