David L. Shira 1924 - 2017

David L. Shira, 92, of Sioux City, died Saturday, June 17, 2017, at his residence.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Peace Reformed Church, with the Rev. Robert Vander Schaaf officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

David was born in New Castle, Pa., on Oct. 20, 1924, to William and Arabella (Dean) Shira. Following graduation from high school, he joined the U.S. Army Air Force as a cadet, but World War II ended before his group was commissioned. He graduated from Michigan State University in 1951.

In 1954, he married EmmyLou "Bee" Hill in Wheaton, Ill., and was employed in design engineering with Taylor Forge and Pipe Works in Chicago. After 29 years as a specialist in flange design, he was transferred to Memphis, Tenn., where he was a manager of engineering services for Taylor Forge International until his retirement in 1992. He was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and served on the national code committee for flange design.

He and his wife moved to Sioux City in 2001. They were among the early members of Peace Reformed Church, where David served on the leadership team and taught adult Sunday School classes at various times.

Survivors include his wife; daughters, Holly (Jeff) Macfarlane of Sioux City, and Jill Shira of Oakland, Calif.; sisters, Edith Richards of Franklin, Pa., and Joann Shira of LaJolla, Calif.; a brother, Wayne of Whidbey Island, Wash.; and four granddaughters, Hannah, Lucy, Clara and Mae Macfarlane.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Dean.

Memorials may be directed to Peace Reformed Church or Hospice of Siouxland.
