Denny was born on Sept. 3, 1950, in Sioux City, to James D. and Mary A. (Schwarte) Campbell. He graduated from Heelan Catholic School with the class of 1969.

Denny met Carol Downhour in 1968 while the two worked at Woolco in Sioux City. He graduated from the United Electronics Institute in Des Moines in 1972. Denny married the love of his life, Carol Downhour, on June 29, 1972, in Elk Point, S.D. Two days later, Denny left for basic training with the U.S. Air Force, in which he served from July 1972 to December 1979. He worked for Dynatech, Thorp Electric, and the South Sioux City Community Schools, before working for CF Industries for 30 years as an electrician. He was employed at CF at the time of his death.

Denny was a devoted and caring husband, dad and grandpa. His passion was ensuring that his family was always taken care of. Denny enjoyed serving on the South Sioux City Fire Department for 35 years, holding several offices and dedicating and sacrificing much of his time to serving others, including serving as fire chief for the last 15 years of his career. He enjoyed camping and riding his motorcycle, but found his greatest joy in his family, especially hanging out with his grandkids. Denny would travel many miles to watch his grandkids in all kinds of events, including basketball, dance, volleyball, softball and cheerleading. He was a member of the Glad Tidings Lighthouse Church, where he played drums for 25 years.

Denny is survived by the love of his life, his wife of almost 45 years, Carol; sons, Kirk (Angie) Campbell and Todd "TJ" (Jessi) Campbell; and grandkids, Aspen Campbell, Autumn Campbell, Faith Campbell, Kara Campbell, Kirsten Campbell, and Andrew Campbell, all of South Sioux City.

Denny was preceded in death by his parents.
