SIOUX CITY | John D. Smith, 85, of Hudson, S.D., formerly of Sioux City, passed away on Sunday, May 14, 2017, at his residence.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 23, at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Judy Shaw as the officiant. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, with family present at 6 p.m., and a prayer service will begin at 7 p.m., at the funeral home. John was born on Oct. 10, 1931, in Versailles, Mo., to Bernard E. and Christina E. (Wingert) Smith.

He married Frances Heath on Feb. 3, 1951, in Sioux City. John was employed by the Swift and Company Corporation for 35 years before he changed his career path to farming and mechanic work for his final 15 years in the work force. He collected tractors, was a mechanic to many neighbors of his for various tractors, and enjoyed antique tractors. John enjoyed his grandchildren, and he liked to occasionally put together a puzzle or two.

John is survived by his wife, Frances, of Hudson, S.D.; sons, David J. (Cindy) Smith of Hinton, Iowa, Richard (Sue) Smith of Hinton, Iowa, Marlin R. (significant other Cindy) of South Sioux City, Marlow L (Rexann) Smith of rural Sioux City, and Roger A. Smith of Sioux City; daughters, Marcella M. (Charles) Salman of Sioux City, Kathy L. (Dr. Mark) Hagen of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Renita (Terry) Uhl of Council Bluffs, Iowa; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents and eight siblings.

Pallbearers will grandsons, Brandon Smith, Bruce Gilbertson, Travis Smith, Brian Smith, Justin Uhl, Joe Smith and Shane Smith.
