Thomas M. Smith, 66, of Dakota Dunes, and Henderson, Nev., passed into the loving arms of Jesus Christ, His Lord and Savior Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at his residence in Dakota Dunes after a courageous eight-month battle with cancer.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 3012 Jackson St., in Sioux City. Cremation will follow the service. Private family graveside services will be at a later date. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. today, with a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, 3220 Stone Park Blvd. Online condolences may be expressed at www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Thomas Michael Smith, the son of Arthur and Susan H. (Harder) Smith, was born on Sept. 17, 1950, in Sioux City. Tom grew up in Sioux City and graduated from Heelan High School. Following high school, he attended college in Fort Dodge, Iowa, and then Briar Cliff College.

On March 24, 1979, Tom was united in marriage to Kathie J. Weaver in Dakota City. Tom owned Hawkeye Adjustment and served as president and CEO for 32 years until retiring in 2008. Tom and Kathie lived in the Siouxland area for several years and in 2007 they moved to Henderson.

Tom was very active in the community. He was on the Mercy Medical Center Foundation board from 2000 to 2015, Dakota Dunes Country Club board of directors from 1998 to 2007, Planning and Zoning Commissioner in Union County, S.D. from 2000 to 2007, member of South Sioux City Optimist Club, Cub Scout den leader, and coached youth soccer, baseball and basketball. Tom was very proud of his Catholic faith and was active in several parishes. He served on the finance committee at St. Michael's in South Sioux City, Sacred Heart in Sioux City and St. Teresa of Calcutta in Dakota Dunes. In addition, he taught CCD for four years and served on the school board for two years at St. Michael's, served on the building committee and building team at St. Teresa of Calcutta, and was a Fourth Degree Knight. While living in Henderson, Tom was a member of St. Francis of Assisi.

Tom is survived by his wife, Kathie Jo Smith of Henderson; one daughter, Bria Leann Smith Dearing (David) of Manhattan Beach, Calif.; one son, Thomas Joseph Smith (Diane) of Sioux City; one grandson, Thomas Michael Paul Smith of Sioux City; two brothers, Clark Smith (Barbara) of San Rafael, Calif., and Pat Smith (Sue) of Derby, Conn.; one sister, Susie Block (Tom) of Omaha; father and mother-in-law, Ted M. and Rita J. Weaver of South Sioux City; two sisters-in-law, Sheila Morris (Cliff) of Urbandale, Iowa, and Sandy Lambert (Bob) of Henderson; one brother-in-law, Todd Weaver of South Sioux City; other relatives; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Joseph A. Smith and Paul Smith; and one niece, Cassie Jo Morris.
